Wentworth Museum getting upgrades

If Pensacola is to flourish in the 21st century, then maybe the historical exhibits that tell the citys history at the T.T. Wentworth Jr. Florida State Museum should join modern times as well.After all, the large exhibition, titled Pensacola: City of Five Flags and in place since 2002, was rather dated, with its old-school diorama and quaint push buttons that launched stiff-sounding recordings giving textbook lectures on the citys history.

Too old school in the digital age, said Robert Overton Jr., chief operating officer of the West Florida Historic Preservation Inc, which operates the downtown museum that attracts about 50,000 visitors a year.So the museum closed its doors Saturday to renovate the museum and install a new 3,000-square-foot exhibit on Pensacolas history, a process that is expected to keep the doors closed until November. 

The $500,000 project is funded in part by a grant from BPs Gulf Tourism and Seafood Promotion Fund, which is to be used to support Gulf Coast tourism and seafood industries affected by the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.Its a permanent exhibit, said Overton, who is responsible for all aspects of daily museum operations and public programming. But in the museum world, a permanent exhibit is about 10 years.

The new exhibit, like the old, will recount Pensacolas rich history, spanning its early settlement and possession by the Spanish, through its time under the flags of the French, British, Confederate, and finally, the United States.But there will be differences, including interactive digital visual and audio displays as well as a broader historic scope. 

Pensacola actually has a little more historical information than it did when the first exhibit was installed.In 2007, University of West Florida archeology students uncovered a shipwreck called Emmanuel Point II that was part of the Don Tristan de Luna expedition to the area in 1559. Materials and information from that discovery will be included.

But Overton also said the new exhibit will focus less on government entities and more on the average life of people in Northwest Florida through the years.We want it to be a more personal exhibit, he said. We want it to be about the people who lived here and the challenges that they face. 

Overton said the renovated museum also will feature more information on current activities in Pensacola.So many visitors stumble in here and want to know what else is there to do in Pensacola, Overton said. So we want to have some information on the Naval Museum, Fort Pickens. We want to give visitors the big picture.

To establish the new exhibit, museum officials first have to renovate the building. Already, demolition crews have ripped up carpet, revealing a bit of the 106-year-old buildings own history.Hardwood floors, dimmed by time and cover, are finally exposed. Ceramic tile and marble fixtures that had previously been covered by carpet also are being repaired.I hate that were closing to the community for a short time, Overton said, but we think well have a better museum experience when we reopen.
