Sling Media Releases SlingPlayer 3.0,Free Roku Channe

Sling Media on Monday released SlingPlayer 3.0 for iOS devices, as well as a free SlingPlayer channel for Roku for both iPhones and Android phones. The subsidiary of EchoStar also announced that a SlingPlayer app for PCs running Microsoft's Windows 8.1 operating system will be made available in December."With today's announcements, Sling Media has clearly brought the Slingbox experience into the living room, changing the way our customers discover, navigate, view, and socialize around content," Michael Hawkey, vice president and general manager of Sling Media, said in a statement."With SlingPlayer 3.0, we're giving customers the tools they need to turn traditional prime time into Prime Time Social Time. Our customers have been asking for Roku support and a Windows 8.1 app.scissor lift We're pleased to deliver the Roku channel today and the Windows 8.1 app in the very near future."SlingPlayer 3.0 is now available for download on Apple iPhones and iPads running iOS 7 or higher, the streaming media company said. A key addition to Sling Media's latest version of its mobile platform is split-screen navigation for iPad users, which the company said "empowers Slingbox customers to browse for other content, view show details, engage with social networks, or see live sports stats while simultaneously watching video" on Apple's tablet.

The update to the SlingPlayer mobile software also adds a new search framework with filtering, content management, and third-party services. Sports streamed to devices used by Slingbox subscribers are now easier to discover as well, and new social media tools allow users to join in on Twitter conversations about content they're watching and more, according to the company.A Slingbox subscription lets users view content from their television providers on their mobile devices, but the latest update to the software also turns iPhones and iPads into "the ultimate remote control inside the home" which lets users "cast their Slingbox experience to a TV from their mobile device," Sling Media said.The Drawstring Backpack SlingPlayer channel on Roku, available now in the Roku Channel Store, lets Slingbox customers watch live and recorded TV streamed through Roku players on their iPhones and Android phones.Slingbox subscribers can also use the software client to turn their smartphone into a remote control capable of sending TV streams to second televisions in the home, as well as navigating the content they want to watch, Sling Media said.The channel is accessed via the SlingPlayer Mobile apps for iOS and Android. The Roku devices supported by the new channel are the Roku 3, Roku 2, Roku 1, Roku LT (models 2400X and 2700X), Roku 2 XS, Roku 2 XD and Roku 2 HD players, and the Roku Streaming Stick, SlingMedia said.The company said it will add support for the Roku HD (model 2500X) and Roku LT (model 2450X) stonefactorychinabefore December."Roku offers consumers the most choice of any streaming device. This partnership with Sling Media will bring even more value to Roku customers by giving them additional ways to enjoy live or recorded TV on their Roku players," said Ed Lee, vice president of content acquisition at Roku.
