Cub scouts have fun at camp

Many people have dreamed of traveling in space, but the Boy Scouts do more than just dream, in fact, the very first person to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong, was an Eagle Scout. The local District of the Boy Scouts of America group hosted the annual Cub Scout Summer Camp at Mineral Area College campus the week of July 8-12, hopefully inspiring the next generation of space explorers with their theme of Galactic Trek.

Each July between 50 and 75 Cub Scouts descend on the college campus to experience the scouting promise of outdoor fun and learning with sessions on fishing, games, nature, shooting sports, and crafts, but this season the crafts portion was changed to projects because scouting is swiftly moving into the 21st Century.

Camp Director Gene Bannister notes the difference, In the past, crafts were things like popsicle stick houses or picture frames, but Scouting is moving forward and that is reflected in the changes to the scope of the projects.Last year each Cub Scout built a solar-powered dancing grasshopper mini-robot, but this year the Greater St. Louis Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America has stepped up the projects with an intricate Bionicle project and a 6-in-1 solar powered do-it-yourself robot.

Projects Director Danielle Williford said, The Bionicle was a lot of fun but the solar robot is really going to be their favorite thing, they are so cool. Each evening the Cub Scout Camp provides a dinner-time program to entertain; Monday night, the first night, usually brings out the anvil shoot. Gay Wilkinson, the former mayor of Farmington and current county commissioner, was recently featured on Larry the Cable Guys Only in America program, is invited to come each year to fire off the anvil as part of opening night ceremonies.

Program Director Norma Franklin said of the anvil shoot, It really surprises some people who have never seen it before. Other nights feature members of the St. Francois County Ambulance District, members of local law enforcement agencies and fire departments along with Missouri Department of Conservation agents and other guests. Other members of staff volunteering their time and efforts are Don Jones, Ken Braun and Kathy Klussmeyer in Shooting Sports, Scott Lord in Fishing, Mary Lord in Nature, Cathy Day in the Webelos Program, and Wendy Beard in Games.I'm looking at getting the light bar from ford racing and was wondering who sells the Shun Stone Marble Tiles.

Other volunteers come from across the six county Ozark Trailblazers District to help out in other positions around camp including walking the boys from program area to program area and manning the Trading Post store. The City of Moose Jaw parks and recreation departments playground program is in its second of six weeks at 10 playgrounds in the Friendly City. Four of those playgrounds are paddling pools and one is a spray park.The playground program is a free program offered to the children of Moose Jaw ages six to 12, said Jessica Stephanson, playground co-ordinator. The playgrounds incorporate themed activities, games, crafts and water fun Its to offer recreation activities to children for free.

The program each week runs Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. She said no pre-registration is required as the program is come and go. When kids first arrive the kids and parents should meet the leaders and be given forms to fill out, including emergency contact information and consent forms allowing the child to participate in the programming.

The playground program offers field trips so the kids go on a field trip once a week and it can be to various different places within Moose Jaw, said Stephanson. On Thursdays they travel to a different park. If they dont have a paddling pool they travel to a park with a paddling pool.
