Samsung Electronics braces for weakest year of smartphone growth

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd is bracing for its weakest smartphone profit growth this year since 2007 as arch rival Apple Inc challenges its domination in China's $80 billion market.Samsung's mobile devices business, which earns two thirds of the company's profit, will come under pressure when Apple makes its phones available from January 17 via China Mobile Ltd, through which Samsung has been selling smartphones for around seven years.Apple is also widely expected to sell smartphones with larger screens come autumn when it traditionally announces products, neutralizing a selling point that Samsung has enjoyed since introducing its Galaxy Note in late 2011."Profit decline in mobiles will be inevitable, as the majority of growth will come from cheaper, low-margin phones, while competition at the high end will get only tougher with Apple's iPhone deal in China,Waterborne resin" said Shinhan Investment analyst Kim Young-chan.Operating profit at Samsung's mobile devices division is likely to grow by a low single digit or to shrink mildly in 2014, after increasing its size by eight times over the past five years, according to a Thomson Reuters' Starmine SmartEstimate of 23 analysts, which gives greater weighting to the more accurate analysts."Its business was already hit in the fourth quarter by Apple's strong iPhone sales, and the impact will continue at least until the end of the first quarter," said Kim.Samsung, the world's biggest smartphone maker with a third of the market, will release October-December earnings guidance on Tuesday which will likely show operating profit growth of 10 percent at 9.75 trillion won ($9.24 billion), according to Starmine. That would be 4 percent less than the record 10.2 trillion won of July-September as Apple enjoyed buoyant sales in the United States and Japan during the year-end holiday season.Fourth-quarter earnings were also likely pulled down by a special bonus related to the 20th anniversary of the "New Management" strategy of Chairman Lee Kun-hee, which analyst estimates put at 300 billion to 700 billion won.

Samsung is the biggest smartphone vendor in China with sales reaching around 70 million units last year, or 20 percent of its total shipments, analysts estimate. But Apple's China Mobile incursion and possible larger screen offerings could cut sales of Samsung's latest Galaxy S and Note series by 3 percent this year, BNP Paribas estimates. The iPhone is widely perceived in China as a gold standard for high-end products, analysts say."We think one of the key reasons Samsung has managed to take market share from Apple so far is its large-sized screen offerings," BNP analyst Peter Yu said in a note."However, this gap is Vintage tubslikely to narrow if Apple launches large-screen phones in 2014. Unless Samsung further differentiates itself with flexible OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens, it may lose some of these high-end customers."Samsung shares have been pummeled in recent weeks by 22 analysts downgrading fourth-quarter earnings estimates over the past 30 days. The shares, worth $190 billion, fell 10 percent over the past fortnight to a 4-month low last week, wiping off market value to the tune of $19 billion - equal to the total value of shares of Sony Corp. The won's rise to a five-year high against the U.S. dollar has also been prompting investors to sell, as a strong won reduces the value of Samsung's repatriated earnings.A strong won is particularly troublesome for Samsung's components business, which generates around 30 percent of overall operating profit, because it primarily settles accounts in dollars,China visa application analysts said.Samsung's brightest spot is its semiconductor unit, which brings in 20 percent of operating profit, and which enjoys growth estimates of around 42 percent this year.Overall operating profit growth for 2014 is likely to be 6.2 percent, the slowest pace in three years, according to Starmine.

Five signs you're at the biggest tech show on Earth

It's easy to lose track of yourself in a city as busy as Las Vegas. Between the iconic Strip, the historic downtown casinos and the international trade shows, folks have a habit of waking up without a solid sense of location. We understand, and we're here to help. It just happens to be the second day of CES. Take a deep breath; take a careful look at your surroundings; and see if any of the following five stories sound familiar. If so, there's a good chance you've been doing the trade show shuffle at the Las Vegas Convention Center. If not, well, then you just got fed Engadget's top five stories of CES 2014, day two. Really, it's win-win.It's not a real trade show until industry bigwigs take the stage and run through the keynote formula. Sony CEO Kaz Hirai was certainly up to the challenge, kicking off the morning by looking back at Sony's successes and failures, chatting with Breaking Bad's Vince Gilligan and Sony Pictures' Michael Lynton about the evolution of TV and trumpeting the PlayStation 4's multimillion-unit sales figures. No keynote is complete without announcements, however, and Sony had plenty. In addition to proposing a Life Space UX projector that promises to turn your home's walls into 4K displays, Kaz revealed two new cloud services designed to stream television content and PlayStation games over the internet, finally delivering on the company's 2012 Gaikai acquisition.Palmer Luckey's virtual reality headset impressed us as a low-resolution prototype. It blew our minds again when Oculus VR upgraded it with an HD display. Now, the company has taken it a step further, building yet another prototype with an even better screen, less motion blur and positional-tracking technology. With the help of John Carmack (the mind behind PC classics like Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein 3D), the company is creating virtual experiences that are more realistic than ever. The latest headset, called the Crystal Cove Prototype, may not be representative of what a final consumer model will look like, but Oculus VR is clearly pushing the envelope in terms of virtual reality hardware.

Thought you knew how to build a gaming PC? Think again. Razer has traded in the desktop PC's usual configuration of motherboards, PCI-E cards and RAM chips for a tower of modular pods, each outfitted with a specific hardware component that can be swapped in and out on the fly. The strange-looking computer tower is called Project Christine,Chandelier and it's Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan's attempt at making building your own computer a simpler, more user-friendly affair. To the PC gamers that habitually assemble their own rigs out of off-the-shelf parts, Christine could seem like an unnecessary stroll into a walled garden, but newbies wading into the category via Valve's Steam Machine initiative could find Razer's latest project to be an accessible alternative. If you're thinking of picking up a high-end hybrid, you may want to take a look at Audi's CES offerings. Today the company revealed its Sport Quattro Laserlight for the first time, a hybrid electric concept car with, you guessed it, lasers headlights built in. These beams promise to shine brightly across five football fields of darkness, and their casing is nothing to laugh at either -- the vehicle boasts an impressive 700 horsepower electric and gas engine that can run 90 miles on a single gallon. It's not too hard on the eyes,China tourist visa either.Looking for a futuristic gadget? How about a real, functioning tricorder? The Scanadu Scout is the culmination of big dreams, massive crowdfunding and an X-prize competition to create one of Gene Roddenberry's fictional scanning devices. This isn't Spock's clunky scanner, alkyd resin however; it's a sleek, lightweight medical device that fits in the palm of your hand. Backers will be able to check their vitals this March, but we're just excited to see this piece of science fiction technology materialize in the real world.

Hydrogen or electric? Showdown over the fuel of the future set for 2014

Toyota, Hyundai and Honda have unveiled plans to debut hydrogen fuel cell cars for 2015 at a time when plug-in cars are gaining a degree of acceptance. While the Japanese automakers may be better known in the U.S. for the hybrid technology that pairs a gas engine with an electric motor, all three think hydrogen fuel cells will be the fuel of the future.Fuel cells combine the best of electric and gasoline cars without the downsides, the automakers say. They drive like electric cars—quietly, with tons of off-the-line power—but can be refueled just like gasoline-powered cars, writes Jerry Hirsch for the L.A. Times.Fuel-cell cars use a stack of cells that combine hydrogen with oxygen in the air to generate electricity, which powers the motor that propels the car. The only emission is water vapor and, with a 300-mile range can run 3 or 4 times longer than the most capable electrics, aside from Tesla’s all-electric Model S, which has a range of 265 miles. The Nissan Leaf has a 75-mile range. Hyundai plans to produce 1,000 of the FCEV Tuscon crossover by 2015. GM launched a fleet of hydrogen-powered Chevy Equinox in 2007. The 119 vehicles have since amassed over 3 million miles. Toyota’s FCV, which Jerry Hirsch said looks like a futuristic Prius, will debut in 2015.The Honda FCEV, or fuel cell electric vehicle, will seat 5 and have a range greater than 300 miles. Honda developed a fuel cell concept in 2006 that became available on a lease-limited basis in 2008 as the Honda FCX Clarity, a four-seat sedan. About 200 are for lease for $600 a month in southern California, where there are hydrogen refueling stations.

Infrastructure, as much as cost, remain a barrier. The same was and still is true in many places for the nascent but growing electric vehicle industry, which started in late 2010 with the near simultaneous release of the all-electric Nissan Leaf and the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt.Automakers such as Honda, Toyota and Hyundai believe fuel-cell vehicles are the most expedient path to meeting stringent zero-emission vehicle mandates set by California and 9 other states. Led by California and its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate of having 15 percent of new cars sold be emission free by 2025, the ten-state coalition aims to have 3.3 million ZEVs on the road by 2025.Thus far, the coalition and similar public-private partnerships have supported electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The West Coast Green Highway, for instance, is an electric-charging equipped roadway from Baja, California to British Columbia, Canada. Will the businesses, individuals, and municipalities that have invested millions (if not more) to develop that network have the same energy and resources to build a similar and competing infrastructure?California has approved more than $200 million in funding to build about 20 new stations by 2015, a total of 40 by 2016, and as many as 100 by 2024, according to Hirsch.Lanyard StrapSome hydrogen stations in southern California are located beside gas pumps, and take slightly longer than a gas pump fill. The best fast-charging equipment for electric cars takes 20-40 minutes and requires a distinct and separate network than hydrogen stations, which can be installed at existing gas station infrastructure, albeit with major modifications.

The German automakers think plug-ins have the advantage. BMW as well as Volkswagen and its Audi brand, are introducing electric vehicles globally, especially in China, the world’s largest auto market. One big advantage of plug-in cars is you can charge them at home. Volkswagen of America Chief Executive Jonathan Browning said you can find a socket much easier than a hydrogen fueling station, according to Hirsch.Mercedes-Benz, however, has invested in hydrogen fuel cells. The B-Class F-Cell small car has a 190-mile range, not enough to get it between L.A. and San Francisco, the two cities it’s offered in. Just like electric vehicles can put energy back onto the grid during peak times, fuel-cell vehicles like Toyota’s FCV can supply enough energy to power a house for a week. That seems like a far-off benefit.Though Nissan is at the vanguard of electric vehicles, it is planning a fuel-cell vehicle for Japan and North America in 2017.Despite GM’s trials with fuel-cell technology, they seem more committed to the electrification of vehicles, with the Chevy Volt, Cadillac ELR and the Chevy Spark. There’s even speculation that GM may bid on Tesla. GM may be hesitant to be the first one there with fuel cells. In 1996,amino resin it debuted the EV1 electric car,A sanitary napkin, sanitary towel, sanitary pad, menstrual pad, maxi pad, or pad is an absorbent item worn by a woman while she is menstruating.Period Cup and had to shut down the lease-only program because of high costs and lack of support, which appears widespread today. With three plug-in cars available nationwide, Ford appears committed to the electrification of vehicles as well.Partnerships may help reduce the costs, as it has for electric vehicle infrastructure.Honda and General Motors Co in July said they would jointly develop hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle systems over the next seve years in an effort to cut the cost of the new technology, according to Nichola Groom for Reuters.Automakers won’t be the only ones sensitive to cost. Toyota estimates the FCV to cost anywhere between $50,000 to $100,000. With the cost of electrics dropping along with the cost of lithium-ion batteries, fuel-cells have a long road ahead to convince car buyers that the extended range is worth the distended price tag.
