Hydrogen or electric? Showdown over the fuel of the future set for 2014

Toyota, Hyundai and Honda have unveiled plans to debut hydrogen fuel cell cars for 2015 at a time when plug-in cars are gaining a degree of acceptance. While the Japanese automakers may be better known in the U.S. for the hybrid technology that pairs a gas engine with an electric motor, all three think hydrogen fuel cells will be the fuel of the future.Fuel cells combine the best of electric and gasoline cars without the downsides, the automakers say. They drive like electric cars—quietly, with tons of off-the-line power—but can be refueled just like gasoline-powered cars, writes Jerry Hirsch for the L.A. Times.Fuel-cell cars use a stack of cells that combine hydrogen with oxygen in the air to generate electricity, which powers the motor that propels the car. The only emission is water vapor and, with a 300-mile range can run 3 or 4 times longer than the most capable electrics, aside from Tesla’s all-electric Model S, which has a range of 265 miles. The Nissan Leaf has a 75-mile range. Hyundai plans to produce 1,000 of the FCEV Tuscon crossover by 2015. GM launched a fleet of hydrogen-powered Chevy Equinox in 2007. The 119 vehicles have since amassed over 3 million miles. Toyota’s FCV, which Jerry Hirsch said looks like a futuristic Prius, will debut in 2015.The Honda FCEV, or fuel cell electric vehicle, will seat 5 and have a range greater than 300 miles. Honda developed a fuel cell concept in 2006 that became available on a lease-limited basis in 2008 as the Honda FCX Clarity, a four-seat sedan. About 200 are for lease for $600 a month in southern California, where there are hydrogen refueling stations.

Infrastructure, as much as cost, remain a barrier. The same was and still is true in many places for the nascent but growing electric vehicle industry, which started in late 2010 with the near simultaneous release of the all-electric Nissan Leaf and the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt.Automakers such as Honda, Toyota and Hyundai believe fuel-cell vehicles are the most expedient path to meeting stringent zero-emission vehicle mandates set by California and 9 other states. Led by California and its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate of having 15 percent of new cars sold be emission free by 2025, the ten-state coalition aims to have 3.3 million ZEVs on the road by 2025.Thus far, the coalition and similar public-private partnerships have supported electric vehicle charging infrastructure. The West Coast Green Highway, for instance, is an electric-charging equipped roadway from Baja, California to British Columbia, Canada. Will the businesses, individuals, and municipalities that have invested millions (if not more) to develop that network have the same energy and resources to build a similar and competing infrastructure?California has approved more than $200 million in funding to build about 20 new stations by 2015, a total of 40 by 2016, and as many as 100 by 2024, according to Hirsch.Lanyard StrapSome hydrogen stations in southern California are located beside gas pumps, and take slightly longer than a gas pump fill. The best fast-charging equipment for electric cars takes 20-40 minutes and requires a distinct and separate network than hydrogen stations, which can be installed at existing gas station infrastructure, albeit with major modifications.

The German automakers think plug-ins have the advantage. BMW as well as Volkswagen and its Audi brand, are introducing electric vehicles globally, especially in China, the world’s largest auto market. One big advantage of plug-in cars is you can charge them at home. Volkswagen of America Chief Executive Jonathan Browning said you can find a socket much easier than a hydrogen fueling station, according to Hirsch.Mercedes-Benz, however, has invested in hydrogen fuel cells. The B-Class F-Cell small car has a 190-mile range, not enough to get it between L.A. and San Francisco, the two cities it’s offered in. Just like electric vehicles can put energy back onto the grid during peak times, fuel-cell vehicles like Toyota’s FCV can supply enough energy to power a house for a week. That seems like a far-off benefit.Though Nissan is at the vanguard of electric vehicles, it is planning a fuel-cell vehicle for Japan and North America in 2017.Despite GM’s trials with fuel-cell technology, they seem more committed to the electrification of vehicles, with the Chevy Volt, Cadillac ELR and the Chevy Spark. There’s even speculation that GM may bid on Tesla. GM may be hesitant to be the first one there with fuel cells. In 1996,amino resin it debuted the EV1 electric car,A sanitary napkin, sanitary towel, sanitary pad, menstrual pad, maxi pad, or pad is an absorbent item worn by a woman while she is menstruating.Period Cup and had to shut down the lease-only program because of high costs and lack of support, which appears widespread today. With three plug-in cars available nationwide, Ford appears committed to the electrification of vehicles as well.Partnerships may help reduce the costs, as it has for electric vehicle infrastructure.Honda and General Motors Co in July said they would jointly develop hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle systems over the next seve years in an effort to cut the cost of the new technology, according to Nichola Groom for Reuters.Automakers won’t be the only ones sensitive to cost. Toyota estimates the FCV to cost anywhere between $50,000 to $100,000. With the cost of electrics dropping along with the cost of lithium-ion batteries, fuel-cells have a long road ahead to convince car buyers that the extended range is worth the distended price tag.

Intel shows off wearable gadgets as chipmaker expands beyond PCs

Intel CEO Brian Krzanich showed off wearable computing devices on Monday including earbuds that monitor your heart rate and a smart headset as the world's largest chipmaker tries to get back on track after missing out on smartphones. With PC sales falling and smartphone growth tapering off,Sanitary napkin Intel and other technology companies are betting that movement-sensing bracelets, biometric patches and other wearable electronic devices may catch on with consumers and become major markets. The evolving category is a major theme at this week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, with several companies expected to unveil their own versions of intelligent and connected clothing.Intel dominates the PC industry, but it has been slow to adapt its processors for smartphones and tablets, markets now dominated by rivals like Qualcomm and Samsung Electronics. The company has struggled in past attempts to expand beyond the PC arena. A years-long project to provide consumer TV services was shelved last year with its technology put up for sale and the company's mobile processors have barely made a dent in the global smartphone market even after major improvements to them. After replacing former CEO Paul Otellini in May, Krzanich, a chip manufacturing and operations guru, created a new division focused on identifying future technology trends and making sure Intel is not caught off-guard again. In his keynote presentation at the technology show, Krzanich introduced some of that group's early results, including sample gadgets that Intel is promoting to consumer device manufacturers."We're looking at a broad ecosystem of wearables, not just the device or the silicon," he said.China tourist visaThe company unveiled a tiny computer built with Intel's low-power Quark technology and packaged in an SD-card form factor aimed at making it easy for clothing and gadget makers to integrate the platform into wearable products.Luxury department store Barneys New York is collaborating with Intel to develop smart bracelets that look like they were created by a fashion designer and not by an engineer.

At the event, Krzanich also showed off Intel's take on stereo earbuds for exercise enthusiasts that - as well as playing music - measure the wearer's heartbeat through their ears. While other companies have launched similar pulse-taking audiophones, Intel's are powered through a microphone jack that connects to the user's smartphone, instead of a separate power source. In addition, integrated software can automatically change the music being played in order to encourage the wearer to speed up or slow down their workout depending on their heart rate.Intel also showed off a Bluetooth earpiece and microphone that the chipmaker says improves the responsiveness of personal assistant smartphone software like Apple's Siri.amino resin The gadget features always-on technology that makes it easier to ask questions of the device and also monitors the user's environment in order to avoid interrupting."The real key here is seamless, no buttons, always listening, but it still has that low-power capability," Krzanich said.Krzanich also showed a smartwatch meant for kids with "geo-fencing" capabilities that alert parents if their children stray from established walking routes to and from home or school or don't arrive on time.

Acer to show off new budget Android tablets at CES 2014

Acer is bringing a pair of low and even-lower-priced Android tablets to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas: the 7.9in Iconia A1-830 and the 7in Iconia B1-720.The Iconia A1-830 (pictured, top) has Intel's 1.6GHz Clover Trail+ Atom Z2560 processor inside, is packing 1GB of system memory, and sports a 7.9in, 1,024 x 768 pixel resolution. It will be priced starting at $149 in North America, or around £90 in UK currency (though additional taxes will apply).Acer didn't identify the maker of the dual-core, 1.3GHz chip powering the $129 (about £80) Iconia B1-720, which also has 1GB of system memory, so it's probably safe to assume it's an ARM chip. Both tablets run Google's Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean mobile operating system. The Iconia A1-830 and will start becoming available sometime in the first quarter of 2014 while the Iconia B1-720 is set to hit retail shelves in mid-January, Acer said.

"Our fundamental goal when creating the Acer Iconia A1-830 was to provide our customers with an optimised Android tablet that stands out from other devices," Paul Tayar, director of product marketing for Acer America's connected devices division, said in a statement. He added: "Consumers expect more than ever from value-oriented products, and the Acer Iconia A1-830 tablet delivers outstanding performance and battery life, a bright IPS display and a more premium aluminium metal finish than is typically offered in tablets in this class."The Iconia A1-830 comes with 16GB of internal storage, plus a microSD slot for expansion up to 32GB. It supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi while also supplying users with Bluetooth 3.0 and a microUSB port. The tablet's front-facing, video chat-friendly camera can capture images at a 1,600 x 1,200 pixel resolution for 720p audio/video, while the rear-facing shooter is capable of 1080p Full HD audio/video recording at 2,560 x 1,920 pixels. The tablet is stated to enjoy more than seven hours of battery life on a single charge, according to Acer.Acer will offer a first glimpse at both tablets at CES 2014. Acer is making a number of accessories available for the Iconia A1-830, including its Crunch Keyboard with a synthetic leather stand that doubles as a tablet stand, and the Crunch Cover,Cast iron tubs which protects the tablet and also works as a tablet stand adjustable to multiple viewing angles. The Iconia B1-720 has fewer frills, not surprising for an addition to Acer's "affordable" tablet line. The tablet is the third iteration of the company's Iconia B1 line, featuring a "slimmer and enhanced design, better sound, and increased performance" over its predecessors, Acer said.

It has a 10-point touch display made thinner and brighter than earlier B1 tablets by Acer's One Glass Solution technology. Like the Iconia A1-830, the Iconia B1-720 is shipping with 16GB of onboard storage, which can be expanded by an additional 32GB courtesy of its microSD slot.Acer didn't offer as many specific details about its more affordable tablet, saying that the Wi-Fi-only Iconia B1-720 has one multipurpose camera situated in the top right corner of the front bezel, while a microphone and a speaker are also located on the front of the device.ChandelierMeanwhile, Acer also said that is adding a new version of the touch-based Chromebook it first outed in November 2013. The tweaks, however, are small; a new colour, "Moonstone white," and the packing in of 2GB of RAM.Drawstring Backpack It will still retail at $299 (around £185).It's also understood that Acer will debut some Windows 8-based products at CES, as well as pulling the cloak on a new budget smartphone, the Liquid Z5.

A Historical Fixture With Modern Appeal

Of all the fixtures you can have in your home, few can match the amazing history or the luxurious allure of a real clawfoot tub. Unlike other so-called traditional products, the clawfoot tub has a very interesting story to tell.history of the clawfoot tubDating back to the approximate time of the Trojan War, the first bathtub of similar design was in use on the Greek Island of Crete, no doubt property of very influential people. Carefully formed of hard pottery, that early discovery was about 5 feet long.Fast forward a few millennia to the mid to late 1800’s. Americans were becoming quite adept at the process of forming cast iron. When a system was developed to coat the cast iron with hard enamel, the “modern day” version of the clawfoot tub was introduced to American homes. As overall advances in plumbing and water distribution marched forward, the clawfoot tub designs became increasingly diverse and beautiful. The style enjoyed great popularity, especially when the full bathroom became standard in post World War 1 homes.Vintage bath fixtures The run of success of the clawfoot tub continued until the introduction of the “built-in” tub in the thirties and forties. The design which we now think of as a “standard” bathtub. One of the most interesting aspects of clawfoot tubs is how many styles there actually are! The choices are nearly endless and involve options for every conceivable component of the tub and faucet. The best way to approach these choices is from the bottom up.

The singular feature that unites all true clawfoot tubs is the feet themselves.Lanyard Strap Often detailed with carvings and designs cast right into the part itself, it’s not difficult to see where the name clawfoot comes from. Options for the feet involve color, finish, detail, and material, with some still being made of cast-iron. But one fact is sure, to be called a clawfoot, there must be feet!Very similar to a clawfoot tub in overall design, there are also options that rest on a pedestal, hence the name for them “pedestal tubs”.Unlike built-in tubs, clawfoot tubs have always been very central in the design of the bathing area. This visual prominence, combined with the practical usage improvements in the design, resulted in a great deal of attention being paid to the shape of clawfoot tubs, and there are many.a modern clawfoot tubModern manufacturing and design processes have even more greatly increased the usability and creative options available to clawfoot tub buyers.Clawfoot tubs are now offered in a variety of construction materials. The original cast-iron is still available and is a wonderful choice. Sometimes the cost of cast iron and the challenge of installing something so heavy lead buyers to consider acrylic which looks the same at a reduced cost and significantly lower weight. Other materials such as steel and porcelain are also available, though less common.

The range of accessory choices available is even more dramatic. Faucets are available in designs ranging from authentic reproductions to modern originals, in every conceivable metal finish and handle style. Even handheld showerheads can be added for a more useful and luxurious bath experience. If a tub alone isn’t sufficient and a stand-up shower is needed, there are options for that as well. Showerheads can be accommodated on beautifully finished hardware and exposed plumbing. Ceiling mount shower heads can also be included in the design. The addition of a shower curtain bar, some of which are quite beautiful, finishes off the assembly and a full service shower results. With such an amazing history that no other tub can even come close to matching, clawfoot tubs add a real story to a bathroom design. Combine this with the amazing array of design options and the vast selection of features and accessories, crystal light and you’ve got a bath fixture that will continue to please and impress for many years to come.
